After looking to the kinda of programmes teenagers seem to be viewing regularly, I can across a very recognisable programme ‘Hollyoaks’ where they have cleverly used the gender signs in their name using the O’s as their base. I realised that the word ‘School’ also has two o’s in and I could try to incorporate the idea into one of my own designs for the school magazine making my teenager audience the teenage students. Using this sign also shows that this is a school for both the female and male population.

The use of a barcode adds to the overall effect of what magazine should look like. The barcode also promotes the product in that it is a mass produced product and high in demand in the stocking business. I chose it to be simple and placed discretely at the bottom hand corner of the magazine cover where it does not distract from the main features and text being read on the cover.

Analysis Of Magazine Covers

-          In these examples from Bliss and Teen Vogue, the large central images of style icons Taylor swift (Bliss) and Miley Cyrus (Teen Vogue) are carefully constructed to form a natural look about them as Miley is seen to be shown very natural and having a daisies planted sweetly in her hair conforming to a normal subtle and gentle teenage girl and constructed to their young female target audience. In Bliss, Taylor swift is advertisings the young trend in teens modern looks in today’s social groups and if standing proud and open giving off a sense of drive and confidence about her and the confidence in the magazine.  The smile in Miley’s facial expression is very placid showing off her fun look on life. Both female figures are shown to be wearing simple colours of white and deeps blues showing the innocence young people possesses and communicates more on a level of their target audience. I also chose ‘Teenage’ magazine cover to show a different gender approach, yet this style seems to be very similar. The main feature of this cover is the young teenage boy David and main headlines that are common and modern in today’s younger generation used, such as facebook!

-          ‘Passion for fashion’ shows alliteration where it helps to make the article stand out, easy to read, run smoothly and easy to remember.  Individual topics are framed around the main central image in different colours and fonts making it clear as a separation from one to another and easy to remember what each article are going to be about.

-          The idea of these magazine covers are to advertise and inform about each main topic it is to reveal within it’s condense. Such as Bliss- Individual tabs such as JLS! TRACE, N-DUBS! Are posted alternatively attracting the target audience’s attention and spacing them out the form excitement and suspense.

TeenageMagazine

-          The use of the colours pink, yellow, greens, blues that are used in the text that frame the girls make its clear the gender of the target audience, the pinks and purple had stereotypical female connotations. Girl Hot VS Guy Hot is a popular sell line for both genders. Bliss also includes such icons like ‘Quiz Overload’ and facebook to attract and get the audience involved. The style of font is fun and bubbly. The large font is easily picked out above the rest of the text and adds colour and style to the magazine. The font is not too childish but yet is not formal and does not conform to a typical news article standard but a teenager’s magazine.

-          The larger font seems to be subsided to one side of the magazine to show importance in each topic. The main headlines are to be shown on their own or nearer the top of the cover.

In my particular magazine I decided to use short and easy text to read that gives the audience the main sense of purpose of my media text. The use of short text also creates a calm effect where the magazine isn’t to busy and cluttered. I also used a larger more stylish formal font in the school colour ‘green’ so that the audience’s eyes would be directed to the title ‘chosen chats back’ in which you would read first before you would want to read on. The use of only one simple photograph acting as my complete background works well and gives colour and depth into the magazine and attracts the audience of an older generation and in a more formal manner showing smart and tidy happy school children in their working environment.  This show the parents and older audience that as well as exams, work and deadlines these students also have the time to reflect on  their time during their Sixth Form life as relaxed as well as demanding. This can be shown using the style of a mixed gender photograph also conveying that this is a mixed gender Sixth Form as they are just appearing just into the page, peering their heads in, wondering what chosen about? The use of one photograph is used commonly among different Medias for a bold, eye catching and simple effect as it is easy on the audience’s eye. I have also used a barcode that is also found on most media products to show it is a mass produced product that is on a very high demand such as newspapers, magazines, packaging ect it also conforms to a more professional appearance and feel to my magazine.

I tried to get my media magazine to conform to hardworking group of Sixth Formers that go to the school and enjoy their time in chosen hill. The image I chose also conveys that they have time for their social lives as well as the overall stress and work of school and pressure. They appear smiling and as a groups acting as the student body of the school. I also chose a mixture of the genders to show this is a mixed school who accepts everyone who is willing to work hard for their education. The overall layout, style and use of font in a calligraphy style font shows that I have chosen my audience to be a more forma such as older students throughout the Sixth Form and parents, this kind of front cover couldn’t be used as a school perspective guide as it is not formal enough but its just enough to show that is designed for a older generation in the school and for parents to look at what their children are experiencing at the school they have chosen. I would like to see this style of magazine set out in the school maybe in the common room areas where the Sixth Form are situated most of their free time so you can just simply go along and pick one up to read.

My main target audience for my school magazine are the internal students that study in the Sixth Form, Parents of the students and maybe also could be the external visitors who may be looking for placed in the Sixth Form to give them an insight of the kind of feel of what Sixth Form life can be like. I didn’t want my magazine to come across to formal so that it wouldn’t put off any students in the school or may want to pick one up in the common room just to relax and read about them. I tried to make it attractive but sophisticated for them as they feel older and want to be treated as young adults, the use of some students themselves in the photograph and small and short pieces of text are simple yet effective where they can read captions quickly and want to read more about it.
